HONORING ST. ANDREW Sunday, Nov. 24, at 1:00 pm Oahu Country Club The Society has not honored the Patron Saint of Scotland with a major event or some time. This year we will do so with a luncheon at the Oahu Country Club. St. Andrew’s Day is actually Nov. 30, but our lunch is scheduled for the previous weekend, Sunday, Nov 24, at 1:00 pm. Member Jim Redmond will enlighten us about St. Andrew and his Scottish connections.
The main speaker will be Colleen Patton, our 2013 SERG recipient. Colleen, a graduate student in linguistics at UH Manoa, this summer visited Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the Gaelic College on the Isle of Skye. There she took short courses in the Gaelic and surveyed other participants from those courses. Colleen is particularly interested in maintaining and revitalizing languages in decline.
As early as August, Colleen had contact with Arlene Holmes Henderson (see page 3), who had seen the article about Colleen and SERG in The Caledonian. The two women found they had much in common. People who attended the New Member party in September have also already met Colleen and know that she comes from Scots-Irish heritage and loves dinosaurs and all things Harry Potter.
Colleen says "Ciamar a tha thu? (Hello) Everything at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig went so well! I feel like I’ve learned so much for two short weeks, met so many wonderful people, and had outstanding weather while exploring the Isle of Skye in class and on my own. I’m very excited to come talk to everyone in the Caledonian Society about what I’ve learned and how they can start learning Gaelic too! … I want to thank you again for the opportunity, especially as even more things keep happening in support of my interest in Gaelic and language maintenance."
